Agree, I've always felt that there is a unique style for every skater; still within the envelope of proper technique, but definitely unique to them. That said, what "feels" low (for example) is often very high :) So its important (I think) to push yourself beyond your perceptions and find the actual limits.

"Getting low" tells you what to do, but does not tell you how to do it. It's like saying go faster. It's not a productive way of thinking. There are many ways of skating lower, but you have to do it properly in order to benefit from it.

You should think of how you need to position each joint, in what amount and in what proportion to each other joint.

So for example, a modern basic position has a bent ankle, knee and hip whereas the classic "air chair" has no ankle bend. The bend of each joint should be proportional, so no crazy trunk bend with straight knees. The amount should be adjusted only until you reach a limit of your body type, flexibility, or it causes something to go out of whack. For some people this might be very low, for other people it won't be. If you skate outside of your optimal position -- higher or lower -- then it will compromise your performance.

For example, on the ice I am too low. I need to actually come up a few inches to my back rounds out and my hips unlock from a forward position. When I skate inline, I can't skate extremely low because the pavement doesn't grip well enough.

Hey Bill, haven't heard anything in particular, but I know Cor went to Mexico with the gang for spring training (on skates) so I'm sure he's still into skating. Are you on Facebook? He follows that more than blogs I think, trying pinging him on FB.

Yeah, unfortunately I have to hold off on racing for a bit, I'm way off the conditioning necessary at this point. Working hard to get back in shape though. I"ll definitely be at the Chicago race, and I'm hoping to do that new version of Big Granite on the island, and there are some other new races as well (New York in June I think). Should be a fun summer! See you at the races!

Hi Michael. Sounds like business has been good.

Good to see you posting again. Great post. Some people would hide away until they get back to whatever weight/condition they consider okay. It's great that you are sharing with and inspiring other people.

Hey, what happened with Cor? He hasn't posted in a while and seemed to be pretty frustrated in his last one. I liked his posts because they were so random. His observations on any of the 5 sports he is serious about. Anyway, not looking for anything secret. Just hoping he's okay. You can just e-mail to the account I entered rather than replying to this comment, if you like.

I guess you won't be at the Road Rash, but maybe we'll cross paths later in the season.

Fun report.

We have awesome smoked meat down here too. Next time, you can try some of it. :) Shicoff may not know the best places for it, though. ;)

You gotta watch out for Art. He is a wily competitor.

Nice video. Good job holding the camera relatively still.

When people say, "Remember the Alamo", you know that they are not talking about the theater, right? :)

Thanks for posting!
